A voice still becoming
His name carries the meaning of springtime: renewal, fast-flowing waters, a new cycle beginning.
Zeegwon Shilling is an Anishinaabe singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and actor from Wasauksing First Nation. He taught himself piano by ear at age three and grew up surrounded by music through his parents’ community radio station.
The great-nephew of renowned Ojibway painter Arthur Shilling, he comes from a family where creativity has always been encouraged. In 2021 he received the Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Protégé Prize, presented in partnership with the Ontario Arts Council, and has since been mentored by Amanda Rheaume, Derek Miller and Lacey Hill.
On screen, he made his television debut as a guest star on CBC’s Coroner, and has appeared in 40 Acres and Apple TV+’s The Zone.
Now he is stepping fully into music, recording his debut EP with award-winning producer Hill Kourkoutis. Rooted in his Anishinaabe identity but open to the sounds and influences that have surrounded him all his life, Zeegwon is at the beginning of something of his own.

A video of a young Zeegwon performing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” on piano is shared on Facebook. It reaches 100,000 views in three days, and more than 600,000 in total.

Television debut
A guest-starring role on the second season of CBC’s Coroner, in an episode written by and starring Indigenous talent Shannon Masters and Tamara Podemski.

Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Protégé Prize
A $10,000 honour recognizing artists poised to shape the future of the performing arts, presented in partnership with the Ontario Arts Council. Mentorship with Amanda Rheaume, Derek Miller and Lacey Hill follows.
